These seminar series, organized in collaboration by the French Institute for Anatolian Studies (IFEA) and the Institut Français du Proche-Orient (Ifpo), emerged from the will of developing scientific reflexion and cooperation on various issues and dynamics in urban space, as well as enhancing scientific dialogue from a Southern perspective. Both research institutes have a long tradition of research on urban studies and the creation of research poles as Urban Observatory of Istanbul is one of the examples. Several researchers working in and with these institutes express regularly their interest on scientific questioning of the city. The seminar aims therefore to answer to this need and to propose a common space for the researchers of different UMIFREs on urban questions. The seminar will be held 2 times per year and will host researchers around a specific topic for each session. The following sessions are already scheduled for the year 2023:

Gender and Mobility in Urban Space

Does gender matter when studying urban space in the Middle East? A dual image emerges in the cities and town of the region. While most of these societies have a reputation for conservativism, the urban spaces constitute sites and offer a set of opportunities which challenge social and political control over women. As Linda Herrera and Asef Bayat proves, new practices and representations are sparked in the urban interstices. At the same time, cities have long provided the stage for the massive flow of migrants, both from within countries and from elsewhere. These newcomers reframe ordinary practices of the city and reshape the right to the city (Lefebvre). These two presentations will explore gender dimensions in work and migration to shed light on the existence of another city.

Suite à notre travail de thèse sur les relations entre les champs économiques et partisans en Turquie, cette présentation se propose d'étudier les enjeux et résultats des élections de novembre 2022 dans les chambres de commerce et d'industrie en Turquie. Six mois avant les élections générales de 2023 et alors que la Turquie fait face à une crise économique depuis 2018, ces élections témoignent du rôle que continuent de jouer les configurations d'alliances locales dans les modes de production du politique en Turquie.

1ère séance - Le musée de la mémoire pour la justice historique : archives des droits de l'homme sur le coup d'État du 12 septembre 1980

Le Musée de la mémoire pour la justice historique a été lancé en tant que projet de recherche du groupe de travail sur la mémoire collective de l'Institut de recherche sur la Turquie (Research Institute on Turkey). Les institutions de soutien, les organisations de défense des droits de l'homme, les avocats, les défenseurs des droits, les témoins, les universitaires et les écrivains se sont réunis dans un but commun : rassembler toutes les données relatives au coup d'État du 12 septembre, comprendre les effets actuels du coup d'État à la lumière d'informations et de documents, et participer activement à la lutte pour la démocratie.

Après le panel, une visite de l'exposition “GEÇMİŞ BUGÜNDÜR” SERGİSİ à Tütün Deposu guidée par les intervenantes et coordinatrices du projet sera prévue.

The number of polling organizations has skyrocketed in Turkey and their role in shaping the public debate has become prominent. This is particularly true for electoral issues as it has been the case during the 2023 electoral campaign. This event will unravel the way poll institutes are developing their data collection and survey production, shedding light on the methodologies employed. Moreover, we will confront the challenges, limitations, and controversies surrounding polling in the context of Turkey's dynamic political landscape.  

This round-table will provide food for thought for addressing these questions by giving the floor to a key actor of the polling industry: Aydın Erdem, analyst for KONDA (Research & Consultancy). Guided by the organizers who are all akin to the political sociology of contemporary Turkey, this meeting will ensure a much-needed dialogue between researchers and pollsters.

Moreover, this event will introduce the topic of the colloquium "Arguing with Numbers: Quantification and its Socio-political Implications in Contemporary Turkey" that will take place on Thursday 28 and Friday 29, September at IFEA.
