Although the shaping of the capital city of Turkey, Ankara, tends to be seen as a mere product of the early Republican Nation-building process, it can be argued that the city's formation is deeply influenced by larger geopolitical and societal forces between different waves of globalization in the last two centuries. Nevertheless, under intertwining grand changes, between periods of prosperity and recession the Republican period marked the beginning of the rise and remaking of Ankara, based on the multi-layered socio-spatial structure of the past and with a vision of a new society and lifestyle. A century-long transformation in the political regime, changes in economic policy, and societal turmoil have been vividly reflected in the socio-spatial development of Ankara and transformed the city into a different spatial entity. In the end, Ankara has been transformed from an urban development template for nationalistic ideals and a balancing attraction focus in the middle of Anatolia competing with into an unplanned large metropolitan area, struggling to hold on to its renowned past and republican ideals to sustain not only its political leverage, social integrity, and urban and environmental assets. In this Seminar, a general account of the socio-spatial change in the capital city of Ankara and possible prospects will be presented with a special focus on actors, processes, urban planning, and institutional structure.
