This paper traces the patterns of name-giving in the Turkish 20th century and relates it with the trajectory of Turkish modernity. Names attest the intertwining of political and national realms with the personal realms and negotiate the two. Names often reflect personal expectations and hopes and amalgamate them with the national ones. They attest promises of upper mobility, cultural change, move from the periphery to the center, appeals of urban life and incorporation to the Turkish national modernity. Demonstrating the trends in name-giving practices through decades, the paper offers an entwined cultural, social and political history of modern Turkey shown at the very personal level.

Doğan Gürpınar is an associate professor at Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ). He has published three books in English: Ottoman/Turkish Visions of the Nation, 1860–1950 (2013), Ottoman Imperial Diplomacy (2014), and Conspiracy Nation: Conspiracy Theories in Turkey (2019).

What can recent and ongoing archaeological studies tell us about the longue durée of urban settlement and interaction around the Black Sea shores and hinterlands? This roundtable brings together four leading experts working with a number of notable excavation sites on the Western and Southern coasts of the sea like Orgame/Argamum (Jurilovca), Apollonia (Sozopol), Teion (Çaycuma), Sinope, and Komana pontiki (Yeşilırmak). Surveying the individual sites and findings, the panel invites to a wider discussion about the Black Sea as a continuous zone of local attraction and connection, as well as its wider relation with the interiors of Anatolia, the Balkans, and the Eastern Mediterranean area throughout the Hellenic, Roman, and Byzantine periods.

Le rêve peut-il être appréhendé par les sciences sociales ? Objet devenu indissociable de la psychanalyse, étudié par la psychologie et les neurosciences, il était jusqu'à ce jour largement ignoré des sociologues. Si des chercheurs ont pu s'interroger sur la manière dont le rêve a été perçu selon les époques et les milieux, personne n'avait cherché à entrer dans la logique même de sa fabrication, et de relier les rêves aux expériences que les individus ont vécues dans le monde social. L'ambition de deux ouvrages – L'Interprétation sociologique des rêves et La Part rêvée – qui fondent une sociologie du rêve, a été d'élaborer une théorie générale de l'expression onirique, en partant des acquis du modèle d'interprétation proposé par Freud, en en corrigeant les faiblesses, les manques et les erreurs, et en tirant parti des nombreuses avancées scientifiques accomplies depuis L'Interprétation du rêve publié en 1900. Le rêve apparaît, à l'opposé de ce que crut Freud, comme l'espace de jeu symbolique le plus complètement délivré de toutes les sortes de censure, tant formelles que morales. La communication de soi à soi dans laquelle s'exprime le rêve fait de lui le plus intime des journaux intimes. Il livre, à qui veut s'y intéresser, des éléments de compréhension profonde et subtile de ce que nous sommes. Son étude permet de voir frontalement ce qui nous travaille obscurément, et de comprendre ce qui pense en nous à l'insu de notre volonté.

Bernard Lahire est né en novembre 1963 à Lyon. Il est directeur de recherche CNRS au Centre Max Weber de l'École normale supérieure de Lyon. Parmi la vingtaine d'ouvrages publiés depuis le début des années 1990, on peut citer Tableaux de familles (Seuil/Galimard/Hautes études, 1995), L'Homme pluriel (Nathan, 1998), Franz Kafka. Éléments pour une théorie de la création littéraire (La Découverte, 2015),  Monde pluriel (Seuil, 2012), Ceci n'est pas qu'un tableau. Essai sur l'art, la domination, la magie et le sacré (La Découverte, 2015), Pour la sociologie (La Découverte,  2016), L'Interprétation sociologique des rêves (La Découverte,  2018) ou encore Enfances de classe. De l'inégalité parmi les enfants (Seuil, 2019). Il dirige deux collections d'ouvrage à La Découverte et a reçu plusieurs prix et distinctions, dont la médaille d'argent du CNRS en 2012. Il a aussi été membre junior, puis senior, de l'Institut universitaire de France.

The arrival of nearly 1 million irregular migrants from Turkey to the Greek Islands in the summer of 2015 has been called the migrant crisis/refugee crisis by the European Union Member States. The actors in the Aegean region affected by the 2015 migrant crisis, Turkey, Greece, and the European Union tried to manage this crisis within the framework of regional and bilateral agreements. This paper will focus on regional migration management in the Aegean region throughout the 2015 migrant crisis and will bring a political economic approach to migration management. Migration management processes in the Aegean region have changed and developed intensely after the 2015 migrant crisis. Among these processes, two main migration management tools, border management and externalization of migration management, came to the forefront. Therefore, the implementation of these migration management tools with the cooperation of the state and the private sector played an active role in the instrumentalization of migrants as a political and commercial bargaining chip. In this paper, public-private partnership in migration management processes in the Aegean region will be discussed with a political economic approach.
For this, firstly, the migration management policies in the Aegean region will be elaborated. Then, the political economy of migration management in the Aegean region during the 2015 crisis will be stressed through border management and the externalization of migration management. Finally, within the scope of migration management, the effects of border policies and externalization of migration management on migrants will be discussed.

Bio

Dila Algan Tezcan has a PhD of International Relations. She received her undergraduate degree from Galatasaray University, Department of Political Science in 2012. She completed her master’s degree in University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, Department of Geopolitics in 2013. She obtained her PhD in International Relations program from Marmara University in 2022. She has conducted researches on
International Migration, Border Studies, Globalization, and Critical Geopolitics.

L'association American Anthropological Association célèbre l'anthropologie et les anthropologues du monde entier à travers la Journée mondiale de l'anthropologie. L'association American Anthropological Association (AAA) a lancé la Journée mondiale de l'anthropologie en 2015. A l’origine elle s'appelait la Journée nationale d'anthropologie, mais elle a été renommée en 2016. La Journée mondiale de l'anthropologie semblait plus appropriée, car l'anthropologie est importante non seulement pour une nation mais pour le monde entier également.

La Journée de l'anthropologie est une journée durant laquelle les anthropologues se réunissent pour échanger autour de leur discipline, avec la participation du public. L'objectif principal de la Journée de l'anthropologie est de partager les valeurs et les connaissances de l'anthropologie avec le monde qui nous entoure. C’est pourquoi des activités concernant la communauté IDEA lab ont prévues d’être organisées. La Journée mondiale de l'anthropologie sera célébrée pour la première fois cette année en Turquie, à Ankara et sera intitulée AnthroDayAnkara 2023.

Tous les anthropologues et passionnés d'anthropologie peuvent assister à ces événements ; aucune expertise particulière de sous-discipline n'est attendue.

Title: Carved Features and Carved Landscapes. Investigating the Technical and Topographical Links between Quarries and Rock-Cut Sites

In the last ten years, an international exchange has been initiated amongst scholars on the methodological and theoretical challenges in the study of quarries and rock-cut sites. A lively community has been discussing the different approaches used for documenting and interpreting features that are generated in the liminal space between human lives and geologies.
The human activity of excavating geological outcrops results in features that are classified according to two main macro categories:
- rock-cut sites which are linked to the life and death of human beings– including dwellings, shelters, burials, and places of worship.
- quarries are mostly defined as production spaces in which technical solutions are aimed at optimizing the extraction of stone from the bedrock.
Despite the difference in the purpose of hewing, conceptual links exist between features carved in the rock. Similarities can be found in the techniques used for hewing as well as the management of waste and by extension, the same networks of knowledge and know-how transmission. Moreover, dwellings or evidence of places of worship have been found in quarries and blocks extracted from rock-cut sites are often used for construction elsewhere.
Quarries and rock-cut sites can often be found associated with the same outcrops, thus outlining a complex taskscape in which the interaction of human communities and bedrock can result in different carved features.
This session will be dedicated to investigating the connections between quarries and rock-cut sites on different scales. We invite contributors, particularly early careers researchers/scholars, working on different case studies, without chronological or geographical boundaries, to discuss:
- methods for mapping carved landscapes, highlighting the human and geological agencies in shaping a taskscape.
- the more detailed study of tool marks and techniques used for extracting stone blocks and carving specific elements, outlining systems of knowledge transfer in communities through time.

La préparation du prochain numéro d’Anatolia Antiqua (XXXI) a commencé. La parution est programmée à Novembre 2023.

Revue scientifique annuelle de l’IFEA dédiée à l’archéologie, Anatolia Antiqua couvre un large éventail de disciplines, allant des travaux de terrain aux thématiques du patrimoine culturel en passant par l’archéométrie et l’étude de matériel. Elle se compose de deux parties : une première partie consacrée aux articles de synthèse et une seconde partie intitulée « Chroniques des travaux archéologiques en Turquie », laquelle est destinée aux rapports des fouilles et études archéologiques en Turquie et ses régions avoisinantes de la préhistoire à la période médiévale au sens large.

Les articles soumis ne doivent pas avoir été publiés antérieurement dans un autre périodique. Les articles seront soumis au comité scientifique international assisté du comité de rédaction. Les décisions en matière d’acceptation ou de refus sont souveraines.

Les articles dont les sujets relèvent du domaine susmentionné doivent être préparés conformément à nos normes de publications (https://journals.openedition.org/anatoliaantiqua/274) et peuvent être rédigés en français ou en anglais.

Les auteur.e.s sont prié.e.s d’envoyer leurs articles et leurs chroniques de fouille au plus tard le 1 mars 2023. Les articles soumis au-delà de la date fixée seront considérés pour le numéro de l’année suivante. L’acceptation ou le refus des articles par les comités scientifique et de rédaction sera annoncé à compter du 15 mai 2023. Il est possible et encouragé de prendre contact avec la rédaction avant l’envoi des manuscrits.
