The Hittite texts of different kinds contain many lists of place names arranged according to the geographical proximity, chronological consequence of their appearance in the course of history, and the different kinds of ideological hierarchy. Some of these lists enumerate not the place names themselves, but the objects connected with them like gods, people, goods or other items. For instance, one group of such lists enumerates the Storm-gods of different cities in the curse section of the international treaties, and its study has shown that the underlying principles throw light on the diplomatic approaches of the Hittites to their parties rather than on the geographical position of mentioned temples. The lecture will show whether the principles of the arrangement depend from the nature of listed objects or from the nature of the text in the corpus of the Hittite place names lists.
